Environmental law existed long before the issue of global warming made the headlines. But environmental protection, and related issues of health and safety, as well as public health, have acquired a new urgency and centrality: they are, now, often at the heart of legal developments.
These complex and deeply existential issues cannot be addressed by compliance efforts alone. Compliance with environmental law obligations is only the beginning. Yet, for companies, whatever their size or the nature of their business, compliance is only one of the effective means of contributing to a solution. As for public authorities, the balanced enforcement of an ever increasing body of laws and regulations is no easy task, but it is a crucial one.
